Study Visits and Guest Speakers

Being based in the academic city of Oxford gives students access to an exciting programme of Guest Speakers and Study Visits. Recent speakers include Ricky Needham, Ian Polychronakis and James Nugee. Study visits have taken students to the Ashmolean Museum, Natural History Museum and Modern Art Oxford, offering rich learning beyond the classroom.

We'll practise with examples like climate strikes, online petitions, and everyday 'big questions' that get people talking. Accuracy in English: Functional Language	Stories of Change Explore short news stories about activists like Greta Thunburg or Malala Yousafzai and learn how the passive voice is used in headlines and reporting. Practise writing your own short news-style sentences about events and campaigns. Accuracy in English: Reading	Speaking Up Listen to and analyse extracts from famous speeches, from Martin Luther King's 'I have a Dream' to Emma Watson's UN talk on gender equality. Practise persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, parallel structures, and strong modal verbs. Accuracy in English: Listening	Study Visit: Museum of Oxford Discover the stories of Oxford's people and communities at the Museum of Oxford. The visit brings history to life, showing how everyday voices have shaped the city over time. Students will explore exhibits, practise language for describing and discussing the past, and reflect on how local stories connect to global change. Study Visit	Voices in Action Review the week's key language - from opinion phrases and passive reporting to persuasive devices and formal writing. Through interactive revision games, quizzes, and short writing/speaking tasks, students will revisit what they've learned and reflect on how their English has improved. 11:30 12:55	Mini Roundtable Take part in small-group discussions on topics such as 'should social media companies ban political ads?' or 'what's the most urgent change society needs today?' to build fluency and confidence in sharing ideas. Fluency in English	Newsroom Roleplay Work in teams to create and present a mini-news broadcast abut a campaign - from climate marches to viral social media movements - practising clear speaking and collaborative English. Fluency in English	Guest Speaker Hear directly from someone making a difference in their field - from community organisers and campaigners to digital activists. This inspiring talk gives students the chance to listen to real experiences, ask questions, and practise engaging in meaningful conversations in English. Guest Speaker	Micro Campaign Work in groups to design a mini digital campaign - a poster, Tweet thread, or Reel script - raising awareness about an issue you care about. Present your campaign to the class as if you were launching it live. Fluency in English	Showcase and Reflection Students present their group campaigns, speeches, or digital projects from earlier in the week in a celebratory 'Voices for Change' showcase. The class reflects on the most powerful ideas and discusses how to use English confidently to make their voices heard in the real world. Fluency in English: Friday Review
